Prime Rib and Boxcars. Whatever Happened To Victoria Station ReviewA propos of today's headlines of scandal and the demise of corporations because executives lost sight of their goals, mislead clients, misused funds, and indiscriminately hired/fired personnel, Tom Blake's chronological saga of Victoria Station offers details of the prime rib restaurants' growth and fall. As a Victoria Station executive for 8 years. Blake presents revelations about 3 Cornell frat boys who had a vision, accrued profits, abused power, and alienated a loyal and funloving staff. I enjoyed the book very much because it revealed a business culture I did not know. I'm impressed with the author's details of budget, inappropriate managerial styles, and the hunger for competition which corrupted their original principles. It is the story of the American Dream gone bad.Though Blake's expertise is in marketing, he is a humanist concerned with the welfare of the staff. He describes the drinking, carousing, and joyful excess in that frat boy culture. As manager of several restaurants, he reveals his involvement with staff members who are victimized by the self-serving directors. While he carried on a romance with his work which he loved, others claimed the restaurants as entitlement to rule, lie, cheat, and elevate their importance because they craved power at the expense of others. Corruption, misuse of money, weak personalities preying on the vulnerability of others, and the terrible cost to employees' families resulted from the directors' insatiable hunger for success at any cost, and the company lost its credibility.
It was no surprise to me that the power structure eventually destroyed trust, fidelity, and integrity; greed, self-involvement, indifference to staff, customers, and the need to manipulate others is the story of the corporate world, and Blake manages to amuse us with the hilarious shenanigans and impress us with the eventual betrayal .Prime Rib and Boxcars.
