Mahima: A Memoir ReviewI bought a copy of this book when a friend told me to check it out. I turned first to the chapter "Justice For Mahima" and saw the beautiful language: "The room was filled with smoke from her burning heart." Wow, a cross between Rushdie and Marquez, and all in this new author from India.
An incredible story, it starts in India with a young woman from a traditional Indian family, albeit a Christian one, who falls in love with a Hindu man when she comes to the States for grad school. But alas, convention wins out over her heart, and she marries a Christian man chosen for her by her parents. The rest of the story is about her growing love and then her anguish as she realizes life with her husband is not as it should be. Children are born and raised, careers ascend, a family builds and then declines, as Mahima comes to terms with the reality of being in an arranged marriage while living in the American culture.
A powerful story, written from Mahima's perspective. It's a love story, a story of personal trial and tragedy, but ultimately a story of triumph over convention, but only after 24 very rocky years. Indeed, by the end of the book, the room is filled with the smoke of her burning heart.
A must read--would love to see this as a movie or mini-series. I ordered more copies for friends. Highly recommended.Mahima: A Memoir Overview
